Russia Urging for IAEA to Visit Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant

Russia has called for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to send inspectors to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), a facility that Russia has controlled since March.

“We believe that the IAEA should not delay the visit. It would be good if it is held in late August or early September, but not all things depend on us,” Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s envoy in Vienna, said on Saturday (August 13), according to the Russian news agency Tass.

In recent weeks, the ZNPP has come under frequent shelling, and Ukraine is blaming Russia for the attack even though the facility is under Russian control. Moscow denies the accusation and says Ukraine is attacking the plant. Ulyanov said that an IAEA inspection will show who is responsible for the shelling.

So far, IAEA officials haven’t blamed either Ukraine or Russia for the attacks on the plant.

Johnson & Johnson to Finally Stop Making Cancer-Causing Baby Powder Globally

Johnson & Johnson is to stop selling and making talc-based baby powder globally, two years after it ended sales in the US and Canada.

The healthcare firm has faced tens of thousands of lawsuits from consumers who allege its talc products, including the instantly recognizable brand of Johnson’s baby powder, caused them to develop cancer.

“As part of a worldwide portfolio assessment, we have made the commercial decision to transition to an all cornstarch-based baby powder portfolio,” the company said in a statement. “As a result of this transition, talc-based Johnson’s baby powder will be discontinued globally in 2023.”

In 2020, the company announced it was to stop selling the talc-based version in North America because of a fall in demand after what it claimed was “misinformation” about the product’s safety and legal challenges.

This followed J&J voluntarily recalling a batch of its baby powder after U.S. FDA regulators found trace amounts of asbestos in the product.

Taiwan Rejects China’s "One Country, Two Systems" Plans for Unification

Taiwan on Thursday (August 11) rejected China’s new white paper that calls for the island to be absorbed under “one country, two systems” and emphasizes Beijing’s goal for “peaceful reunification.”

Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council said “one country, two systems” was “unacceptable” and is “not an option for Taiwan.” The island’s Foreign Ministry slammed the release of the white paper, which came after China held its largest-ever military drills around the island in response to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visiting Taipei.

“China has repeatedly staged provocative actions, including sabre-rattling drills, cyberattacks and disinformation to try to coerce Taiwan in recent days, and even released its so-called policy white paper towards Taiwan to promote its so-called grand mission of unification with the motherland,” Taiwanese Foreign ministry spokeswoman Joanne Ou said.

Zelensky Vows Ukraine Will Attack Russian Soldiers at Europe’s Largest Nuclear Power Plant

Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, has vowed that his forces will target Russian soldiers who shoot at or from Europe’s largest nuclear power station, amid rumors that the Kremlin may falsely claim Kyiv has directly struck the critical site.

Zelenskiy said anyone giving orders for attacks on the site or nearby towns and cities should face trial by an international court, as concern about the safety of the nuclear site remained high.

“Every Russian soldier who either shoots at the plant, or shoots using the plant as cover, must understand that he becomes a special target for our intelligence agents, for our special services, for our army,” Zelenskiy said in a video address on Saturday (August 13) night.

He called for new sanctions against Russia that would “necessarily block the Russian nuclear industry,” and he argued that “absolutely all officials of the terrorist state, as well as those who help them in this blackmail operation with the nuclear power plant, must be tried by an international court.”

Court Records Show Trudeau's COVID-19 Vaccine Mandates for Travel Based on Politics, Not Science

The lawsuit has made documents public which show health officials were scrambling (https://www.commonsense.news/p..../court-documents-rev to find any justification for COVID-19 vaccine mandates for travel before they came into effect.

The documents also show that the lead doctor who approved the use of COVID-19 vaccines was not consulted on whether such mandates would even be effective.

But it's not the only shocking piece of testimony to come out of the lawsuit.

Aaron McCrorie, the Associate Assistant Deputy Minister, Safety and Security at Transport Canada, was emailing people at Health Canada in October 2021, just weeks before the travel mandate took effect, looking for anything to support the policy.

“To the extent that updated data exist or that there is clearer evidence of the safety benefit of vaccination on the users or other stakeholders of the transportation system, it would be helpful to assist Transport Canada supporting its measures,” McCrorie wrote.

He followed up again days later saying, “need something fairly soon.” The only response he received, according to the court record, a set of talking points on the general benefits of vaccination.

It’s not like the federal government wasn’t looking at studies to try and find a link between COVID-19 vaccination rates and travel, it’s just that the data didn’t back up their policy.

Dr. Lisa Waddell, an epidemiologist at the Public Health Agency of Canada was one of the witnesses. She’s also author of a study for PHAC which showed little transmission on airplanes.

Indeed, even the Trudeau government had been publicly opposed to any kind of COVID-19 vaccine mandate for months before their sudden change of stance in August 2021. Before the flip, Trudeau himself had described such policies as “extreme measures that could have real divisive impacts on community and country” and had said this is not how Canada operates in interviews.

More U.S. Lawmakers Visiting Taiwan Just 12 Days After Pelosi Trip

A delegation of American lawmakers is visiting Taiwan just 12 days after a visit by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that angered China.

The five-member delegation, led by Democratic Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts, will meet senior leaders to discuss U.S.-Taiwan relations, regional security, trade, investment and other issues, the American Institute in Taiwan said. The institute represents the U.S. government, which does not have official ties with Taiwan.

China, which claims self-ruled Taiwan as its territory, responded to Pelosi’s Aug. 2 visit by sending missiles, warships and warplanes into the seas and skies around Taiwan for several days afterward.
