Homeland Security Records Show "Shocking" Use of Phone Data, ACLU Says

The Trump administration’s immigration enforcers used mobile location data to track people’s movements on a larger scale than previously known, according to documents that raise new questions about federal agencies’ efforts to get around restrictions on warrantless searches.

The data, harvested from apps on hundreds of millions of phones, allowed the Department of Homeland Security to obtain data on more than 336,000 location data points across North America, the documents show. Those data points may reference only a small portion of the information that CBP has obtained.

These data points came from all over the continent, including in major cities like Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Denver, Toronto and Mexico City. This location data use continued into the Biden administration, as Customs and Border Protection renewed a contract for $20,000 that ended in September 2021.

The American Civil Liberties Union obtained the records from DHS through a lawsuit it filed in 2020. It provided the documents to POLITICO and separately released them to the public on Monday (July 18).

U.S. State Department Approves Over $1.4 Billion Arms Sales for Estonia and Norway

The State Department on Friday (July 15) approved two potential major arms deals for NATO members Estonia and Norway, that combined are worth over $1.4 billion.

The potential deal approved for Norway is for AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) and related equipment worth about $950 million. According to the Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), the missiles will be used by Norway’s fleet of US-made F-35s.

The DSCA said that the sale will allow Norway’s F-35 fleet to “fulfill NATO missions and meet US European Command’s goal of combined air operations interoperability and standardization between Norwegian and US forces.”

The principal contractor for the Norway deal is Raytheon Missile Systems Company, a subsidiary of Raytheon Technologies, where Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin served as a board member before taking his post at the Pentagon.

The deal approved for Estonia is for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and related equipment, a sale that’s worth up to $500 million.

Estonia shares a border with Russia.

NYU School of Law Warns Digital ID “Paving a Digital Road to Hell”

New York University’s Center for Human Rights and Global Justice has issued a chilling warning about the potential dangers to human rights posed by the push for digital identity, writes Derrick Broze in a new report for the Last American Vagabond.

In mid-June, the Center for Human Rights and Global Justice, a “hub for human rights study” at New York University (NYU) School of Law, issued a 100-page report detailing the growing dangers of a reliance on digital identity around the world. The report, titled Paving a Digital Road to Hell?, examines the role of the World Bank and other international networks which have been promoting the use if digital ID in recent years.

The report notes that the World Bank has been “energetically promoting biometric and other digital ID systems that are increasingly linked to large-scale human rights violations, especially in the Global South.” The researchers warn that digital identity schemes “promoted in the name of development and inclusion, might be achieving neither.” Despite ostensible good intentions on the part of some promoting these systems, they “may well be paving a digital road to hell.”

The press release for the report notes:

“Governments around the world have been investing heavily in digital identification systems, often with biometric components (digital ID). The rapid proliferation of such systems is driven by a new development consensus, packaged and promoted by key global actors like the World Bank, but also by governments, foundations, vendors and consulting firms.“

The report states that many of the digital identity schemes are taking inspiration from the Aadhaar system in India. This specific digital ID model has prioritized digital ID as an “economic identity."

The report also details how the promoters of the new digital/economic identity model often evade “difficult questions” about the legal status and rights of those being registered. In fact, the report finds that the evidence indicates it is the small group of companies and governments who stand to benefit most from these systems.
