Not too long ago, elected officials, business owners, and residents of the Finger Lakes gathered in Albany to call on New York Governor Kathy Hokul and the Department of Environmental Protection to shut down a bitcoin miner located in the region.

The hype picked up in 2020 when the former Greenridge Generation coal power plant was converted into a crypto mine powering 17,000 bitcoin machines.

The energy process involves sucking in 139 million gallons of water every day from Seneca Lake and pumping it back out at 108 degrees. This process increases the risk of toxic algae blooms, making this water source for 100,000 people undrinkable (locals claim mutant fish swim in the lake).
