Ukraine busts 'human trafficking ring' that sold BABIES to Chinese 'single men of certain orientation'

Ukrainian police have raided a private reproductive clinic that allegedly "sold" babies to China. While the suspects are accused of "human trafficking," surrogacy is a legal gray area in Ukraine.

The scandalous case was uncovered late Saturday by the country's Interior Ministry. Police broke up a "human trafficking" ring based at a private reproductive clinic in Kiev.

Deputy Interior Minister Anton Gerashenko shared more details about the case on his Facebook page. The ring involved the head of the clinic, her son, and two other Ukrainian and three Chinese nationals. They were charged with human trafficking, which can lead to 12 years in prison and confiscation of property.

Most of the clinic's clients were single Chinese men with a "certain orientation," as Gerashenko put it. While the exact number of babies trafficked is not known, at least 140 other Chinese nationals are under investigation, the official added.

The price for a single baby was about $50,000. The large sum covered artificial insemination by a surrogate mother, legal assistance and the organization of sham marriages needed to smuggle the children abroad. It is unclear whether the babies' fathers then adopted them.

Five newborns believed to have been abducted were found by investigators in private homes in the Ukrainian capital and placed in maternity hospitals.
