The $580 million Mickleham quarantine centre, officially known as the Centre for National Resilience, might have seemed like a good idea back in early 2021, at least politically. A purpose-built camp plonked down in a relatively isolated spot, it would allow stranded overseas travellers to return home en masse and isolate in safety, and it would once and for all end the fiasco that was Victoria’s hotel quarantine scheme.
