Ipswich on tour: Private jets, luxury hotels and a $575 afternoon tea
When it first opened to the public, the Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi was the most expensive hotel in the world.
This is where the then-mayor and senior colleagues stayed for two nights on a secretive study tour in 2012. It was a far cry from Ipswich at the time, let alone the Wolston prison where Pisasale now spends his days and nights after being convicted of extortion.
The palace was just one stop on a two week taxpayer-funded study tour the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) later found involved “excessive” spending and a “significant amount of non-official activity”.
Pisasale’s travel companions were the then-deputy mayor Paul Tully, who still serves on council, as well as the then-CEO Carl Wulff and financial officer Jim Lindsay.
