Libertarian and Classical World Liberalism
An Ibero-American Republican Tribe in the USA and Democratic Tribe in Latin America and Europe

Liberal Political Psychology
We live in a world in which liberalism is under attack from all sides and is blamed for all the socio-economic ills the world is suffering.
That there is an economic crisis? Wild liberalism is to blame. That inequality is increasing? Liberal policies are to blame, without stopping to think whether, in fact, inequality is increasing and whether the reasons for this are actually to be found in other areas, such as technological change or shortcomings in public action. The term neoliberalism is even used pejoratively, in an attempt to disqualify, even demonize, those who practice the doctrine of freedom and defend the value of the individual as a unique and unrepeatable being, as opposed to the dominant collectivist thinking, which subsumes the individual in society, annuls it and destroys its true essence.
Classical liberalism and libertarianism have so many enemies, both on the right and, above all, on the left, because liberalism is the main enemy of all totalitarian doctrines, since the supreme value of the liberal is tolerance. It is this attitude that provokes this extreme hostility towards liberalism. Although it must also be admitted that, on other occasions, liberalism has been denaturalized because those who used that label to present themselves were not liberals but, for one reason or another, it was convenient for them to appear as such.
Today's Europe is infinitely more civilized, prosperous and just than in the past, and this is due to democracy and liberalism. Today, where the right and liberalism form a "right-wing liberal-conservative union".
The irony in this context, however, is that beyond sterile polemics, liberalism has triumphed. As we know, today's Europe is infinitely more civilized, prosperous and just than in the past, and this is due to democracy and liberalism. Without this binomial there would not exist something as fundamental as equality of opportunity, which is what all mankind aspires to.
Mario Vargas Llosa in his book "The Call of the Tribe" clarifies, the idea that liberals have of equal opportunities is very different from the conception defended by egalitarians. As Vargas Llosa explains, equality of opportunity should not be the ultimate goal of political action, but the principle. Therefore, liberals do not accept that, at the starting point, there are those who enjoy such privileges that it is impossible for others to compete with them. Correcting this situation does not imply, of course, the imposition of equality by force. On the contrary, equality of opportunity must be the result of an educational system that fosters it, meaning that everyone has access to a quality education that allows each person to develop and become the best version of him or herself. How can this be done? A liberal idea such as the school voucher, which was much discussed by the left, was adopted by Sweden, the paradigm nation of the Welfare State, and it is working very well. In short, education is the cornerstone on which the principles of justice and equity must be based. The differences that may later appear will be the result of what life has in store for each individual, but this is something from which no one is exempt and which no one can change, not even by decree.
Education is the cornerstone on which the principles of justice and equity must be based.
And yes, the proper functioning of a society requires compassion for what may happen to others. The problem is that the State does not have to assume the social functions required for the proper functioning of society. On the contrary, on many occasions, society itself does it much better than the State, in a much more efficient and less onerous way. What happens is that the enemies of liberalism, who are many and varied, have so impregnated everyone with the idea that the State is the best servant a society can have, that we often forget that it is not so, that it works less efficiently and more expensively than society itself. A State, for example, should not have companies, because companies are much better managed in the hands of the private sector. Moreover, companies are more efficient when the State stays out of this area and does what it has to do, for example, guaranteeing equality before the law, defense or public safety. But it should not intervene in the economy, except to guarantee competition. That is how things work best.
Liberalism also has other virtues. Now that Spain, like Austria and Hungary, is affected by the problem of nationalism, Vargas Llosa reminds us that if there is a doctrine that is against nationalism without inferiority complexes, it is liberalism because the love of freedom is the very essence of its thought. Nationalism is at enmity with freedom. Therefore, it is very important for liberalism to reject nationalism, because it is an enemy of democracy and in its ideological background there is racism, by making a value of belonging to a particular nation. It is worth remembering in this respect, as Vargas Llosa does, that the tribe represented a stage of civilization in which the human and the animal were practically adjacent, but then, due to different factors, the tribe evolved and individuals emerged, beings who differed from the others simply because they chose. As the individual emerged, the tribe disappeared. This differentiation, thanks to democracy, allows coexistence. Unfortunately, nationalism has not yet left the tribe, it is still the tribe. That is why it potentially means violence, in the short or long term. Nationalism has resurfaced in Europe and this must be confronted in the name of freedom and democracy because it is incompatible with them.
Today, Liberals in Europe as well as in Latin America, we must analyze these factors that Liberalism represents in society, and represent it as an ideology of life, living it from actions, discourse and taking into account its basic principles.
