Participants in the Great Train Robbery in custody, Britain, 1963.
The Great Train Robbery is the common name for the attack on a mail train that occurred in the early morning hours of Thursday, August 8, 1963, on the Bridego Railway Bridge in Buckinghamshire, England. After tampering with the semaphore system of the railway line, a gang of 15 men, led by Bruce Reynolds, attacked a Post Office train and stole from it 120 bags of money bills worth £2,631,643 (equivalent to 46 million pounds to date). Most of what was stolen has never been recovered. The bandits not only stole £2.6 million, but also became the heroes of a huge number of films and books.
