In de zoektocht naar de oorzaak van de plotselinge toename van jonge kinderen met acute hepatitis wordt door de WHO niet uitgesloten dat er in een deel van de gevallen sprake is van een overdraagbare oorzaak, zoals een virus. In Nederland én in Schotland zijn gevallen gemeld van leverfalen waarbij kinderen met elkaar in contact stonden.
