Pope John Paul II initiated a rehabilitation of the scholars in 1992 and publicly admitted the Church's error. With his findings, Galileo Galilei opened up a completely new perspective of the universe during his lifetime, which freed itself from the dogmas of the Roman Catholic Church and was based purely on scientific facts. His lifelong conflict with Rome and the experts of his time laid the foundation for modern astronomy.
