Harvard Review Reveals Jeffrey Epstein’s Deep Ties and Big Donations to the University

Harvard University said Friday (July 29) that convicted Jeffrey Epstein donated more than $9 million to the university over the course of a decade and had an office on campus after his 2006 arrest.

A university review launched in September 2021 found that most of Epstein’s donations occurred before his 2006 arrest, including a $6.5 million gift in 2003 to help create the university’s program in evolutionary dynamics.

Epstein was accepted as a visiting fellow at Harvard in 2005, Lopez added, before his first arrest. Between 1998 and 2002, Epstein donated $200,000 to support the work of then-Psychology Department Chair Stephen Kosslyn, who recommended Epstein’s admission to the program.

Epstein was admitted as a fellow for the 2006-07 academic year but withdrew following his arrest.

Even after that, however, Harvard Vice President and General Counsel Diane Lopez said in her review that “Epstein regularly visited, had card key access to, and was provided a designated office space within [the program in evolutionary dynamics] until 2018. Granting him that level of access raises serious questions about compliance with Harvard’s policies, and beginning in 2017, about whether [program head] Professor [Martin] Nowak … acted in deliberate circumvention of Harvard’s security procedures.”
