Israeli NGOs to build 1,000 settlement units in occupied Palestine for Ukrainian refugees

Thousands of Ukrainian Jews are set to be relocated to the occupied territories amid the ongoing crisis with Russia

March 01 2022

On 28 February, the settlement division of the World Zionist Organization (WZO) announced the start of a plan to establish 1,000 settlement housing units in occupied Palestine to “assimilate” Ukrainian Jews who have recently fled the country.
The organization says that their plan has been presented to the government in Tel Aviv, which must approve it for construction to begin.
According to the emergency plan, apartment buildings ranging from 55 square meters to 90 square meters will be built in areas near the northern border in the Negev, Wadi Araba, Wadi Springs near Beisan, and in the Jordan Valley.
Israeli media reports say that over 5,000 Ukrainian Jews have already contacted the special Jewish Agency hotline set up on 24 February looking to relocate to the occupied territories. Some 200,000 people in Ukraine are eligible to immigrate under Israel’s law of return.
The plans to further expand illegal Jewish settlements in occupied Palestine comes amid rising tensions between local residents and Israeli occupation forces.
Last month, hundreds of local Arabs in the Negev region staged protests against their land confiscation by the Jewish National Fund. The mobilization was met with brutal force by the Israeli occupation troops, leaving dozens injured.
An estimated 300,000 Arab citizens live in the Negev on 5 per cent of their land. The other 95 per cent of the land they say has been confiscated by Israel since 1948.
On 22 February, the occupation forces demolished the Arab village of Al-Araqeeb in the Negev for the 198th time since 2010. This marked the second time the Bedouin village has been demolished since the start of 2022, with local reports stating that it was demolished 14 times in 2021 alone.
After the 1948 Arab-Israeli war that led to the creation of Israel, over 700,000 Palestinians were expelled or fled their lands due to the Nakba, or catastrophe, while around 160,000 remained in their homeland within the borders of the Jewish state. They automatically became citizens of Israel, which transformed them into a minority in their own historical homeland.
Today, Arab citizens of Israel make up approximately 20 percent of the country’s population, equating to around 2 million people in total.
