Labor property inheritance tax 'not a radical new suggestion'

Deputy Labor Leader Richard Marles has denied Labor wishes to institute a “death tax” on those wishing to pass property to their families after they die.
It comes after Labor spokesman Jason Clare said deceased parents would only be allowed to transfer houses to children earning under $90,000 – and if they don’t, the property will be sold and the government will take a cut.
“The child in that circumstance will have the opportunity to buy the government out if they own the home outright, which is the same as if people themselves over the course of their life no longer qualify for the property,” he told Sky News Australia.
“This is a scheme which is designed for people on low and modest incomes who really face a lifetime of rental right now which gives them a genuine option of owning their own home.”
