The U.S. Secretly Reviews and Approves Many Israeli Airstrikes in Syria

According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Israel has been secretly coordinating with the US on many of its airstrikes in Syria, and senior officials at US Central Command have reviewed and approved many plans in recent years.

Israel frequently bombs Syria and frames the operations as strikes against Iran or Hezbollah, although the air raids often kill Syrian government troops and members of Iraq’s Shia militias. The latest Israeli airstrikes on Syria disabled the Damascus International Airport, marking a significant escalation in the air campaign.

Current and former officials told the Journal that the main focus of the coordination is on airstrikes that pass near al-Tanf garrison, a US military base in southern Syria near the border with Jordan. The officials said that the “vast majority” of the strikes passing through that area had been approved by the US.

The US has about 1,000 troops stationed in eastern Syria.

Israel’s Damascus Airport Strike Paralyzes Travel and Heralds New Phase of Syria Conflict

Shortly after dawn on June 10, Damascus International Airport was bombarded by Israeli missiles, leaving three huge craters in each of its two operational runways.

Since the Syrian civil war began in 2011, Israel has carried out hundreds of air strikes against Syria. While Israel rarely comments on individual air strikes, it has acknowledged carrying them out, which it says are necessary to prevent Iran from gaining a foothold in Syria.

Syrian Transport Minister Zuhair Khuzaim said: "The workshops are working around the clock to restore Damascus International Airport to service as soon as possible, and it will be put back into service within the next few days."

A member of the ground staff working with Syrian Airways told Middle East Eye: "We were surprised that this kind of attack happened on a civilian airport, even if we fix it [runway] when will it stop?"

"There is a possibility that this might happen again. I and my team survived the strike but the country is now restricted from an aviation perspective, there are no guarantees this won't happen again."

Putin: Unipolar Order Has Ended, West Headed for "Change of Elites" as Russia Emerges Stronger

Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed in further remarks given before the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum that anti-Russian sanctions have only come back to hurt the people of the EU and the West broadly, amid soaring gas and food prices, inflation fears, and severe supply chain shortages.

He declared the end of the unipolar world as we know it, saying, "Over the past decades, new powerful centers have been formed on the planet […] each of them develops their own political system and public institutions, implements their own models of economic growth, and, of course, has the right to protect themselves, to ensure national sovereignty. We are talking about real processes, about truly revolutionary, tectonic changes in geopolitics, global economy, the technological sphere, in the entire system of international relations."

"It is clear why they waged this propaganda campaign, what all these spells about 200-to-1 ruble-dollar exchange rates and claims that our economy would collapse were all about. All this was—and remains—a tool in the information warfare, an attempt to put psychological pressure on Russian society," he continued, stressing further that "some global currencies are committing suicide."

On the EU, he said: "The European Union has completely lost its political sovereignty, and its bureaucratic elites are dancing to someone else’s tune, accepting whatever they are told from above, causing harm to their own population and their own economy."

He said there will be a "change of elites" in the West as part of the "revolutionary" shift initiated by the Ukraine war and the US-Europe overreaching: "Such a detachment from reality, from the demands of society, will inevitably lead to a surge of populism and the growth of radical movements, to serious social and economic changes, to degradation, and in the near future, to a change of elites," Putin declared.

Well This is Awkward... Biden Administration Quietly Urging Companies to Purchase Russian Fertilizer

The Biden administration has been quietly urging agricultural and shipping companies to buy and carry more Russian fertilizer, according to Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the efforts.

The move comes as fears over sanctions have led to a sharp drop in supplies, contributing to the ongoing spiraling global food costs.

With Moscow being a key supplier of fertilizer, the US and EU have included exemptions on sanctions against doing business with Russia—however many shippers, banks and insurers have been cautiously staying away out of fear that they might accidentally run afoul of the rules in an expensive lesson. Now, US officials are trying to encourage activity in the space.

We can't help but see the irony that Washington is urging farmers to buy Russian fertilizer, while at the same time providing arms and funding to Ukraine.

NATO Secretary General: Turkey’s Concerns About Finland and Sweden Supporting Terrorism Are Legitimate

Objections from Turkey have stalled membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization for Finland and Sweden. On Sunday (June 12), Secretary-General Jen Stoltenberg said Ankara’s concerns about terrorism were legitimate.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says Finland and Sweden support members of the Kurdish Worker’s Party (PKK). Ankara claims the PKK is a terror group and has fought a multi-decade insurgency against the country’s Kurdish minority.

During a meeting with Finland’s president, Stoltenberg weighed in on Turkey’s concerns. “These are legitimate concerns. This is about terrorism and about weapons exports. And we have to understand and remember that no other NATO ally has suffered more terrorist attacks than Turkey,” he said.

Secretary-General Stoltenberg laid out why Ankara was an essential member of the alliance. He pointed out, Turkey’s "strategic geographic location" on the Black Sea. He added, "We also need to take into account that no other NATO ally hosts more refugees than Turkey.”

Helsinki and Stockholm submitted applications to join NATO last month. Stoltenberg and Secretary of State Antony Blinken have repeatedly expressed that Sweden and Finland would become alliance members in short order. However, to join NATO, a country must receive support from all member states, and Ankara has placed a roadblock in the membership process.

China is "sure that the United States is locked in an irreversible process of decline that will gradually eliminate it as a serious rival in Asia. Their confidence is based partly in Marxist theory, which says that a mature capitalist economy like that of the United States must encounter financial crises and class conflicts that will drag it down from the heights of prosperity." https://foreignpolicy.com/2022..../06/04/china-ukraine
