This is going to be a bad week for the Murdoch family’s control of media power in Australia, with a new crop of federal politicians heading to Canberra.
So many of these new MPs faced uphill battles to get elected, fighting a torrent of Murdoch disinformation about them and the political movements they represent. In the end, Murdoch spent millions of dollars pushing out political propaganda in support of politicians who would put his interests ahead of the public interest.
In a lot of seats, Murdoch was successful. But overall, we now have an even bigger number of MPs who believe in launching a Royal Commission to reverse the toxic consolidation of media power in our country.
In the last parliamentary term, we launched our record-breaking petition for a Murdoch Royal Commission with more than 500,000 signatures. We also secured a Senate Inquiry which heard damning evidence of Murdoch’s abuses, prompting the Labor-Green majority to recommend the next government launch a Royal Commission.
This term, we need to double down on our efforts to bring about material change. Can you forward this email to a friend and ask them to join our campaign, to help double our power going into the new parliament?
As someone who knows Canberra reasonably well, I know we can do this. And I’ve been working closely with Kirsti and our team on some new ideas.
