Robots Guarded Buddha’s Relics
In India, robots or mechanical beings that could move on their own were called “bhuta vahana yanta,” or “spirit movement machines” in Pali and Sanskrit. Buddhist legends of north-eastern India from the fourth and third centuries BCE describe an army of automata that guarded Buddha’s relics.
In one version, which features both killer robot-assassins and robot-guardians, a young man travels in disguise to the land of the Yavanas (Greek speakers) to learn the art of robot-making, a secret closely guarded by the yantakaras (automaton makers) there, knowledge that he then steals to make the artificial guards. We find stories of automatic warriors guarding the Buddha’s relics in Chinese, Sanskrit, Hindu, and Tibetan texts.
According to Buddhist texts, after Buddha’s death, his cremated remains were divided and distributed among eight princes. Each of the princes constructed a stupa (Buddhist shrine) at or near his capital city, within which the respective portion of the ashes was enshrined. Some 300 years later, Emperor Ashoka opened seven of these stupas and removed the Buddha relics (his goal was to redistribute the relics into 84,000 stupas which he planned to construct throughout his empire). According to legend, the ‘serpent king’ was guarding the Ramagrama stupa, and prevented Ashoka from unearthing the relic. A good bet might be that, that was where Siddhartha was really buried with his bones intact and that the others were decoys.
