PREAMBLE
We stand at a critical moment in Earth's history, a time when humanity must choose its future. As the world becomes increasingly interdependent and fragile, the future at once holds great peril and great promise. To move forward we must recognize that in the midst of a magnificent diversity of cultures and life-forms we are one human family and one Earth community with a common destiny. We must join together to bring forth a sustainable global society founded on respect for nature, universal human rights, economic justice, and a culture of peace. Towards this end, it is imperative that we, the peoples of Earth, declare our responsibility to one another, to the greater community of life, and to future generations.

Wir stehen an einem kritischen Punkt der Erdgeschichte, an dem die Menschheit den Weg in ihre Zukunft wählen muss. Da die Welt zunehmend miteinander verflochten ist und ökologisch zerbrechlicher wird, birgt die Zukunft gleichzeitig grosse Gefahren und grosse Chancen. Wollen wir vorankommen, müssen wir anerkennen, dass wir trotz und gerade in der grossartigen Vielfalt von Kulturen und Lebensformen eine einzige menschliche Familie sind, eine globale Gemeinschaft mit einem gemeinsamen Schicksal. Wir müssen uns zusammentun, um eine nachhaltige Weltgesellschaft zu schaffen, die sich auf Achtung gegenüber der Natur, die allgemeinen Menschenrechte, wirtschaftliche Gerechtigkeit und eine Kultur des Friedens gründet. Auf dem Weg dorthin ist es unabdingbar, dass wir, die Völker der Erde, Verantwortung übernehmen füreinander, für die grössere Gemeinschaft allen Lebens und für zukünftige Generationen.
