Amazon Starts Buying U.S. Hospitals for Billions of Dollars in Major Expansion of Tech Giant's Pivot Into Health Care

Amazon will acquire the primary care provider One Medical for $3.9 billion, the companies announced Thursday (July 21), in a major expansion of the tech giant’s move into health care.

One Medical is a membership-based primary care provider that emphasizes digital services and building a seamless relationship with patients. Headquartered in San Francisco, the company operates 188 offices with 767,000 members.

The acquisition dramatically expands Amazon’s healthcare reach. In 2020, it debuted the new Amazon Pharmacy, two years after it acquired online pharmacy PillPack for $753 million.

The tech giant already operates Amazon Care, which offers telehealth visits for employees of certain companies in some cities. In 2021, Amazon snagged a major client, partnering with Hilton to give its employees on the corporate health plan access to Amazon Care’s services.

Amazon’s founder, Jeff Bezos, also owns The Washington Post.
