On yer bike! Economic Crash Puts Sri Lankans in Spin
Faced with 3-day petrol queues and a collapsing economy, many middle-class Sri Lankans have taken to two wheels to ride out the crisis.
Amid the worst crash in decades, demand for bicycles is at a peak. Used bikes are now being peddled for more than double the price, retailers said. Even helmets and spare parts are in short supply as imports of bicycles are banned.
Commuters have been forced to saddle up with no oil shipments for over two weeks and fuel restricted to essential services. A Sri Lankan doctor said, "I don't think our country's problems will be resolved anytime soon, but at least I get plenty of exercise now.". (Reuters)
